Closure

Mine closure planning


We have extensive mine closure and rehabilitation experience. Our team produces high quality mine closure plans (50+ approved) for all phases of mining. We’re proficient at planning, implementing and managing multidisciplinary closure projects and we develop site-specific rehabilitation plans. Our mine closure risk assessment and gap analysis processes are rigorous, just like our stakeholder identification and engagement strategies. We provide peer and technical advisory support for closure projects. 

Engineering

Landform design


Water management and constructability are critical components of landform design. We utilise drainage assessments and targeted modelling to develop practical designs to meet agreed design requirements and stakeholder expectations. We complete options analysis to balance competing outcomes and optimise our designs. To accompany the final designs, we prepare design documentation and develop quality management programs to ensure that closure outcomes meet design requirements. We undertake cover design and seepage modelling, sediment control design and landform evolution modelling to assess and improve long term closure performance. 

Closure delivery


We support our clients through all phases of the delivery of closure works, including contractor procurement, preparation of construction documentation, project management and cost control and technical support during the program of works. To enable efficient delivery that meets quality requirements, Mine Earth provides on-site survey services, performance verification and quality management through closure works.

Closure cost estimation


Leveraging off our experience in design and execution of closure works, we develop robust closure cost estimates informed by real world experience. We prepare closure cost estimates for all mine life stages, from greenfield operations to pre-execution estimates. We also provide due diligence assessments, third-party cost estimate reviews and cost optimisation studies.

Materials

Mine waste characterisation


Our team has unique and specialised geological and geochemical skills. We assess the erosion potential and geochemical characteristics of mine waste from robust sampling programs and existing datasets. We develop tailored and practical mine waste and PAF management plans based upon mine waste characteristics and the materials inventory. These are critical inputs for effective landform design, to leave a positive legacy for future generations.

Soil assessments


We undertake soil surveys and develop plans for the management and deployment of rehabilitation resources. Our soil and mine waste inventories optimise resource management for you. Mine Earth conducts specialised soil characterisation in our soils laboratory and we run laboratory and field-scale soil research trials.

Performance

Rehabilitation performance assessment


We design and undertake rehabilitation monitoring programs to assess closure performance against measurable completion criteria, with a focus on ultimate lease relinquishment. This involves developing practical closure objectives, outcomes and criteria, and relinquishment planning.


Our landform scale erosion assessments are conducted using UAV derived digital terrain models, orthophotos, and multispectral data. We undertake transect-based vegetation monitoring and landform scale multispectral vegetation data analysis. We also undertake closed site inspections.
